Family Time
Let’s face it—as the weather improves, so do the events on our social calendar. Whether you are planning family reunions, graduation parties, birthdays, weddings, or activities for the kids, it is the time to invite the sunshine and enjoy all the fun and entertaining. There is no better way to celebrate the new season more than uniting with your loved ones. If you are like me, I am always looking for ways to add to the fun with the family, so I am getting started! I read not too long ago in a recent survey conducted with 4,000 parents and children that one in eight families admits to spending no more than two hours together each week. Three out of 10 parents and children say they spend between two and four hours together. Family meals, watching TV and going out together are the most common ways that they spend time together. Only one in 10 parents cited reading stories. More than two-thirds of parents blame money and a lack of time as the biggest barriers to spending more time with each other. One in five claim that family members don’t want to spend time together. Crazy, huh??
We all fall into that battle of chasing the clock and worrying about money which puts more pressure on the home life.
One of the rules at my home is if we are doing anything family related whether it is dinner, game night, or stories, no phone is allowed; trust me, this is HARD for me too! I guess you feel like everything has to be accomplished now. I remember when we were touring the Moody Mansion in Galveston, the tour guide said that back then when Mrs. Moody would have a gathering or a celebration she would personally invite the guests over for a cup of tea and give them details to the event. What? Can you imagine doing that; we are lucky to get invitations out on time for a party. Heck, I get more e-vites than anything else. It is always with good intention to be the best at everything, but as parents, spouses, friends, or co-workers, at some point you have to look at the bigger picture. We have to stop and say to ourselves—I need to spend more time with my family, go fly a kite, go walk the park, or even go shopping. Just take time because at the end of all this, that is the only thing you will want to have done. When the journey is over, it is what will always be remembered, missed and longed for.
To my little brother who will be wed by the time this issue comes out, we want to say “congratulations” and we wish you both a wonderful journey as you build your new life together! reviewit readers, just kick back and enjoy the spring weather since we bring you another fun filled issue on how to stay healthy and go green.
